Charlotte Gainsbourg is my girl crush

Picture 8Can you imagine being in the position to declare, “I’d like to work with (insert influential artist here)” and suddenly, you’re in his studio creating art with aforementioned artiste?

Charlotte Gainsbourg can.

The actress, singer and progeny of super cool ’60s icons Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin has recently collaborated with Beck to create new music featuring her barely-a-whisper vocal style.

Daily Candy recently posted a video from their new album. I’m a fan.

A love of breakfast

What’s Cracking Good — English breakfast

After having a ‘cracking good’ English breakfast at a crappy hotel in London, I created a blog. Dayne Gilbey showed his reverence of British first meal  by having one tattooed on his head.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day…Here’s something to be thankful for…cute Internet videos!

Cool Cousins

What’s Cracking Good — New Vampire Weekend video

The song and the video for “Cousins” are much better than previously pimped “Horchata” which, after the first listen, made me want to punch someone.

Night, night Nyquil

As far as I’m concerned, the best thing about being sick, is taking Nyquil; That  boozy green liquid that numbs the pain and lulls me to sleep.

I rarely take medicine. Throbbing needs to occur before I’ll pop an Advil. Ditto for other sinus and cold medicines, but there’s just something about that green gel-y juice that warms my cockles and my heart.

As much as I love Nyquil, I imagine it must be bad for me (Note the unnatural green color).

Today I read about a Nyquil substitute called KniQuil made from mint, agave nectar, ginger and a few shots of various liquors.

“What I need is something that will wrap me in a cocoon of warmth…but not put me into a coma,” the creator of the Nyquil-esque elixir explains.

EXACTLY!

On his website, he gives the recipe (mint, chiles and Southern Comfort?) and demonstrates the fairly complicated process of making a shot of KniQuil…in a rather entertaining fashion.

I’m not sure I’m ready to replace my cold-and-flu cocktail, but it’s certainly worth a gander.

Think geek

What’s Cracking Good — Nerdy boys

Everyone made fun of me when I said I thought Harry Potter was cute.

I suppose the ribbing could reflect the whole twice-his-age creepiness…but still, when I said he was cute, most tended more toward ewww than agreement. Then he showed his pecs and junk on Broadway…and everyone got on board. Now he’s too old, too short for and not nearly nerdy enough for me.

I’ve always loved boys that tended toward brainy. Save the Jump Street years (Johnny Depp doesn’t have a geek bone in his body), most of my crushes could be filed under “nerdy.” Shawn Cassidy was a crime solving Hardy Boy, Michael J. Fox was a Republican over-achiever, and my husband is convinced he can build rockets.

Geeks…all of them.

So imagine my excitement when finding a book devoted to unlikely sex symbols: Michael Cera, Ed Norton (loved him as uptight doctor in The Painted Veil), John Cusack…it’s the best kind of brain candy.

Sit, stay, roll over…

What’s Cracking Good — Puppies!

This one is both adorable, and slightly frustrating.

Ode to Balloon Boy

What’s Cracking Good –Impromptu videos

The Breakup Society‘s Ed Masley had some extra time on his hands this weekend:

Update:

I guess making a song to commemorate a news item is a trend. New York Magazine posted the 5 best Balloon Boy tribute songs.
