Shopping Etsy: Fringe on top…and more

“Damn,” I thought, “fringe on a shoe is a good thing.” While I’m at it, how about on a bag? And I really like bangs, which my British friends refer to as fringe.

Shopping Etsy: Handkerchiefs

While trolling the 75% off  Frances sale, I stumbled onto a shelf with lots of  vintage handkerchiefs for $5 each. I bought 2.

I’ve never used a handkerchief, but I’ve always been fascinated by them.

Sure, the idea of blowing your nose on something, sticking it into your pocket, then reusing the same snotty rag again and again, well, it seems a little gross.

Even if you wash it, you know what was on there.

As long as you don’t have a perpetual sinus infection,  it could be okay…maybe?

Regardless of your feelings on phlegm, vintage handkerchiefs come in a variety of pretty colors and patterns that are pretty to look at, utilitarian or not.

Shopping Etsy: Alaska

I just got back from a trip to Alaska to see my sister-in-law and her family.

Not being particularly outdoorsy, I wasn’t expecting to really like it…but I LOVED the majestic beauty and adventure…despite the threat of death at every turn.

Possible deaths: Mud flats (you sink, the tide comes in, you drown), avalanche, moose trampling, drunk driving around dangerous curves, BEARS…

Anyway, some Etsy products that are reminiscent of my near-death Alaskan adventure.

The threat of bears was ever-present. I might not have been so frightened if I thought one would be smoking a pipe and wearing a top hat.

I saw 2 babies and a mom in the wild, which nearly trampled my nephew. This cardboard variety won’t kill you.

Cold beauty. Bet that cold could kill you.

I didn’t actually see a puffin, much to my parents’ chagrin. I think they are actually benign.

Wild raspberries are drop dead delicious.

If you eat an real life Amanita Muscaria, the result could be kidney failure. Not death, but carrying this cute wallet is probably safer.

8.) Vintage Salmon Pin, $10
Watched the running of the salmon, which could only kill you if you do so with a bear. Sadly, the salmon are the ones that end up dying after they lay their eggs.

Back-to-school shopping

I remember when back-to-school shopping meant jeans with a lipstick patch on the pocket and polo shirts.

This year, I’m teaching a class (Jesus!), so my back to school ensembles should be a little more…professional.

What I’m wanting: Emma Watson’s look from the July issue of Teen Vogue. Though I’ll probably go sans stole.

I’ve been looking to eBay and Etsy for the look for less. Shop red blazers on eBay and chain necklaces on Etsy.
